Student Nurse Extern
Job Description
Department: Nursing Service
Reports To: Preceptor, Supervisor, DON
SUMMARY
The student nurse extern will provide direct and indirect patient care which have been mastered in his/her prospective school of nursing under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse Preceptor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assists the RN in assessing the patient’s physical and psychosocial status.

Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and the Nursing Department.

Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to their preceptor or appropriate person and documents findings in the record clearly and concisely.

Administers medications and treatments of assigned patients according to extern skill level and approved skills.

Assist the RN in the coordination of discharge planning.

Maintain hospital approved infection control practices.

Intervenes appropriately to emergency situations, documenting all interventions and patient response adhering to hospital policy.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The student nurse extern must be currently enrolled in an approved school of nursing program within the United States preparing candidates for registered nursing licensure, and have successfully completed one academic year or two clinical semesters of clinical courses in nursing, must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and must agree to the Mississippi Student Nurse Externship Program Guidelines.
